Project title: Snow Stat: Secure Multi?party Statistical Computations in Health Environments
Project description: Healthcare systems are under serious challenge!

Currently the population demography is changing. The age dependency ratio is expected to decline by 43%. The ageing population requires focus on chronic diseases. This creates more demand for healthcare and increased healthcare cost. Even worse, many people have multiple chronic conditions, but not much is known how to treat them.

Healthcare systems are expected to deliver as much care as the society want. Infectious diseases for example Influenza costs a large amount of healthcare budgets. However, healthcare systems have highly constrained budgets.

Concurrent with the increasing availability of electronic health data, these healthcare challenges put a huge interest for health data reuse. Data provide a huge evidence base and gives potential to improve healthcare systems´ effectiveness, efficiencies and quality of care.

Privacy and legal issues are main factors that limit health data reuse. In most regulations healthcare data reuse require de-identification (anonymization) or patient consent. Some regulations allow disclosure of patient data for public health without consent. However, still data disclosure requires discretion of providers.

In this PhD we use techniques from secure multi-party computation and privacy-preserving record linkage research areas. Existing techniques have limitations for computation on big and very distributed data. We are doing research to develop techniques that provides the necessary privacy guarantee and scalability for privacy-preserving reuse distributed health data.
