Project title: Understanding the Resilience of Software Defined Networking for Industrial Control Networks
Project description: The gradual shift in industrial control networks from serial-based communication to Ethernet provides the opportunity of exploiting the benefits of software-defined networking (SDN) for industrial control networks. However, the use of SDN for industrial control networks can introduce new challenges because the core benefits of deploying SDN are also major causes of concern. Several methods have been proposed in the literature for the resilience of the SDN industrial control networks but due to their limited capabilities, the problem still remains an open research area. The proposed research is to address the threats to reliability, resilience, and security that may arise from adopting a dynamic and virtualized SDN for industrial control networks that are substantially more sensitive to performance and quality of service compared to a regular information network such as in electrical power system automation. The goal of this research is to develop models of resilience and automated means of discovering efficiency bounds for attacks against the SDN control plane, particularly for cases where attackers will know or can learn about the ICN protocols entering critical operations or transaction and of resilience mechanisms such as failover protocols used by defenders.
