Project title: Application of New Sensors and Controllers for Distribution Grid Operation
Project description: The traditional SCADA/DMS systems need to be adapted to collect, process and present the steadily increasing monitoring data volume taken from a plethora of different data sources. Current communication solutions are either inflexible, proprietary, expensive solutions designed for one specific application, or flexible but not prepared for the real-time, reliability, and security requirements given by the power grid monitoring and control applications. To enable utilisation of all the new opportunities provided by ICT systems in smart grid operation, an “industrial internet of things” (IIoT) is needed that is easily reconfigurable to meet new requirements, regulations and standards. Within the safety domain, the focus has shifted from reactive actions that prevent accidents, to resilient systems. Such a shift is also needed for cyber security and in order to improve the preparedness in operation of the integrated power system and ICT system.
This research will address the challenges in comparing and quantifying the trade-off between different design options for power grid integrated with ICT based control architecture. The quantification is with respect to dependability / reliability, and performance of the future power grid with integrated ICT based operation support. Another challenge addressed in this research will be to find what are the consequences of security policies and rules to keep updated the new sensors and controllers added to the distribution grid.
