There are significant monetary benefits in processing and selling personal data. We have seen industries rising using new technologies such as AI, Machine learning, blockchain and businesses such as social media sites, data companies, etc.. all using our personal data.
It has become extremely important and challenging to preserve the privacy and freedom of individuals. The challenge is rising from the fact that initially in the design period there were no monetary benefit or competitive edge from embedding privacy preserving measures into these systems or services. Since the GDPR was introduced companies are now trying to comply with the law but in a lot of cases the GDPR is too general so they don’t know how the exact steps to take or they just find a loophole in the system and use it as an easy workaround. The goal of my research is to build frameworks that can support and guide the design of new systems and infrastructures that are using, storing or selling personal data with a heavy focusing on the technical side, like the use of certain cryptographic algorithms or the design of data centres storing our information in a way to fully support the preservation of rights of individuals. Taking into account that since we are handling an important and valuable asset it can be the main target of cyber and hacker attacks as we have seen many examples before.
